Skeena Local Action
Basis of Unity:
We are a group of activists in Northwest BC seeking to build a network by connecting social justice activists within the region and beyond. We connect the struggle of Palestine to other justice struggles as they intersect under the colonial legacies of capitalism & imperialism. We seek to connect a big picture understanding with small scale, localized actions to advance liberty for all.
Values:
Indigenous self-determination - supporting indigenous liberation struggles in Turtle Island, Palestine & beyond
Socialism - critique of Capital production, recognition of class, and promotion of collective ownership
LGBTQ+ inclusive - support all forms of gender expression and trans-inclusive feminism
Environmentalism - working to slow the climate crisis and opposing the actions fueling it
Non-sectarianism - open to working with groups of other political values on joint projects of demarcated scope
Solidarity building - valuing the creation of an activist network and putting people in community
Systems analysis - recognizing the 'big picture' context of our local actions
Collectivism - the impact of people's actions are stronger when coordinated and united together
Equity - From each according to their ability, to each according to their need. Fairness and justice in how people are treated.
Grassroots democracy - building power from the bottom up, respecting collective decision making
Operations:
Collective decision making - actions are determined at meetings with the feedback of organizing committee, consensus is sought first, vote will take place if there's any disagreement. Utilizing the opportunities, skills, and resources available to us at the time and letting that determine course of action. Local actions-in-principle will be greenlit by organizing committee (whoever shows up/agrees to BoU) before coordination takes place.
Diversity of Tactics - recognizing the value in different methods and types of actions whether electoral intervention, protest, community events, labour organizing etc.
Delegation - appoint lead coordinator for certain projects, actions, roles who will be responsible for finalizing items; not necessarily one 'lead organizer' at all times, but determined by project
Levels of engagement - no rigid distinction btwn members & organizers
If someone shows up to a meeting for the first time, go over basis of unity and if they don't agree they can choose how to engage otherwise (as partner or not at all)
Actions any member/organizer can bring forward for the LAN to take up should fall within scope of basis of unity.
External partners don't have to agree with basis of unity, just agree to work with us on certain projects with shared goals.
Promote projects, actions, initiatives, events etc that fall within basis of unity amonst network
